Attorney Everett C. Hoffman
Since 1999, Everett Hoffman has concentrated his practice in labor, employment, and civil rights law, representing labor unions and employees. He began his legal career as a consumer rights attorney with the Louisville Legal Aid Society (1983-1987) and then as an Assistant Attorney General for Consumer Protection with the Kentucky Attorney General's Office (1987-1992). For seven years (1992-1999), Everett served as Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, where he was the ACLU's chief advocate on issues such as freedom of speech and religion, racial and criminal justice, and LGBT rights.
Education
Everett grew up in Louisville, received his bachelor's degree in Economics from Pomona College in Claremont, California (1978), and earned his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 1983).
Experience
Everett's experience includes extensive litigation in trial courts, appellate courts, and administrative agencies at both the state and federal level, including the Kentucky Supreme Court, the Kentucky and U.S. Courts of Appeals, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Kentucky Personnel Board. He has represented labor unions and employees in a number of significant cases, resulting in court decisions vindicating labor and employee rights. Everett has been a frequent presenter at legal seminars on labor and employment law, consumer protection, and constitutional rights. He is a member of the AFL-CIO's Lawyers Coordinating Committee (LCC) and the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).
Community Contributions
Everett was a founding director of Day Spring, a Louisville non-profit organization providing housing and support services to 40 low-income adults with mental retardation, and served as an officer and board member for twelve years. In 1999, he received the Community Service Award from the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and, in 2000, the Unity Award from the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist & Political Repression.
